Tattoo #10 – Ship with Stars and Clouds

Location on Body: Chest

Mark Treas Inspired Art

Shop: Mother’s Tattoo in Covington, KY

Time it Took: 8 hours? Who knows? Can’t remember

Cost: $450…I think

This last year was a strange year for our family. We spent 8 out of 12 months doing (for the most part) unplanned travelling. It started with God telling us to go to Portland (where we were for almost 5 months) and ended with us in Cincinnati for about 2 months.  During that time we noticed some things change about our family.

  • We became more and more detached to our house. We lived out of a suitcase and packed light. The question of where  we “lived” took on a level of complication. Every time we would come home from traveling we would fill garbage cans full of things we once considered essential or beneficial to our lives.
  • We depended more and more on faith. Picking up your family of 6 to head to a city with your job, mortgage, and their education up in the air does not fall in the “common sense” category. The more we traveled in obedience in the direction we felt Jesus was leading us the more and more we found stability in faith and the less secure things like income, houses, and other temporal systems became.
  • We became more of a family. When we first set out for Portland by biggest fear was that we would be compromising the benefits of stability that you hear a family needs.  I was prepared to pull the plug the second I felt like our family goals were being threatened. So of course it came as a surprise when the relationships within our family took on more strength and energy than we had ever seen. Continue reading

Tattoo Number 8 – Dandelions

Mother's Tattoo

UPDATE: Interview added of touch-up with artist 1.15.09

Location On Body: Right leg

Shop Location: Covington, Kentucky

How Long It Took: 12 hours

The Idea:

The main idea for this tattoo came when I was driving from Seattle to Cincinnati with the family over this past summer. I was listening to one of my favorite songs from high-school called Dandelions by Five Iron Frenzy. This is one of the few songs that I have been able to consistently worship to for 10 years. It’s not that I have not had songs to worship too, it’s just that most of the songs have come and gone, so this song has been different in that regard. To tell you the truth, I’m not really sure why I never even thought of this tattoo design earlier, but when I did it seemed like a no brainer. The simplicity of the images combined with the 10 year association was a lay up.

Tattoo Number 7 – Heart etc. Part Two

If you have not already you should read Part One of this post if you want understand what the heck I am talking about.

This tattoo was pretty unique, in that by the time I actually started scheduling appointments to get it done, the major belief/experience shift that had inspired it had pretty much come and gone almost 5 years earlier. Not to say that these thoughts were no longer important to me but they were not the primary angle that I had been currently experiencing as I had for the time period previous. In that sense, a certain part of me almost wanted to skip this tattoo and deal with something that commemorated something a little more current but a certain part of me felt like that would be cheating. Shop Location: Seattle

How Long It Took: About 11 hours  one 5 hour session, one four hour session and a 2 hour session

The Background

The concept of this tattoo was one that I came up with close to 7 years ago. This is when we started to attend the worship service at Grace Seattle. At the time, the head pastor, Tommy the tattooed ex Army ranger made it his duty to preach the gospel to everyone each week. His catch phrase was “I’ll stop preaching the gospel when you stop forgetting it.” Well, I never stopped forgetting it and he never stopped preaching it. By this time in my life I had heard “the gospel” thousands of times but I had never heard it like this. When I walked away from one of Tommy’s sermons I have never felt so completely meritless and yet so completely loved. I remember during communion Tommy and Dave would look you in the eyes and say “through Jesus you are adopted, accepted, free, and forgiven.” At this time in my life these words started to mean something to me. My time at grace, especially my first three years, was a very monumental time, looking back into my story. It was there that I started to connect the feeling and knowledge of Jesus loving me and me needing him with all of these stories that I had heard in sunday school. Continue reading

Tattoo Number 6 – Traditional Kami Montage

Location On Body: Right Shoulder

Shop Location: Maui, Hawaii

How Long It Took: about 4.5 hours

I won’t lie to you. In the life of every tattooed person there are dry spells.I am no exception.  This tattoo came at the end of my longest dry spell since I had turned 18. 5 years, 1 wife,  and 4 kids later and I had nothing to show for it…well except for the 1 wife and 4 kids.

Here’s how it happened. We decided to go to Hawaii for our five year anniversary with our friends Colin and Grace. The first day we were there we went for a walk and ended up in a tattoo parlor. Continue reading
